Advancements in wood construction technology are creating new opportunities and ideas in the design community. The development of engineered lumber and the

success of the tall wood building sector are currently driving innovation. The philosophy behind the wood construction movement is that local wood products are the most sustainable building choice. Canada boasts the most sustainably managed forests in the world, making wood an environmentally friendly material choice. Aside from the green advantages, wood construction has been responsible for some of Canada’s most inventive – and beautiful – buildings. Calgary’s Rocky Ridge Recreation Facility has the largest wood roof in North America. Lake Winnipeg residence, “The Pole House,” is a plywood structure elevated on stilts. By raising the structure from the ground and placing it on locally sourced gas pipes, the cabin now has stunning views of the lake. Who knows what advancements in wood construction will lead to next?
