ART GALLERIES IN UNEXPECTED PLACES

Homes turned galleries are opening up in living rooms, kitchens and balconies as part of a new trend to create cozy, conversational art showings.

Home Sweet Home in Bengaluru, India is one such gallery and has hosted events while displaying artwork in the bathroom, kitchen and bedroom. Meant as informal showings, these at-home galleries often include potluck dinners in order to encourage visitors to discuss art and bond over a shared meal. Organizers of such showings say the purpose is to replace stuffy and intimidating formal galleries with relaxed, casual spaces for visitors to take in the art at their own pace. It’s more about the experience than just selling art. The trend is also seen in other areas of the art industry; with individuals temporarily turning their homes into music venues and theatres for plays and dance works to be shown.
